Description:
The Sony DSR-PD170 DVCAM compact camcorder provides high quality acquisition in the DVCAM component digital format, as well as in DV, allowing up to 40 minutes recording on one tape Mini DVCAM tape, or 60 minutes on the same tape in the DV mode. This compact camcorder features three Advanced HAD 1/3 inch CCDs that allow two scanning modes: 480 progressive (for still) and interlaced (for video). These Advanced HAD CCDs also provide high quality acquisition with increased resolution and sensitivity at reduced noise and vertical smear. The new enhancements to the CCDs have enabled the minimum illumination to be improved to an incredible 1 lux. The DSR-PD170 also features a built-in slot for MemoryStick. Up to 988 JPEG pictures can be stored on one 64 MB MemoryStick. In addition, the stored images can be mixed or keyed to the live image allowing logo insertion and/or mix effects. The built-in high MTF quality 12X electronic zoom lens features Auto focus and SuperSteadyShot with manual Zoom, Focus and Iris control capability. Other enhancements from the DSR-PD150 include a larger high-resolution B&W viewfinder and a newly developed color swing out Hybrid LCD with greater brightness to increase monitoring capability in bright light conditions. The DSR-PD170 now has a larger handle with start/stop functions as well as zoom control on the handle for easy access and enhanced shooting capabilities.
Sony DSR-PD170 Features:
• DVCAM Format for Professional Shooting Environments
DVCAM is Sonys professional version of the ubiquitous DV format recording component digital for high quality and a universe of editing solutions. The camera has iLink, the Sony version of Firewire (also known as IEEE1394). The DVCAM format runs the tape at a higher speed than the consumer DV format, which means more information to tape every second of recording.
• Advanced CCDs and Upgraded DSP
The DSR-PD170 offers both outstanding video and still image capture. The 3-CCDs have 380,000 pixels each that deliver over 500 lines of resolution. In video mode, the digital signal processor (DSP) outputs a 480 line interlaced signal resulting in over 500 lines of high quality video. In still-capture mode, the DSP outputs 480 lines progressively. With recent technical improvements, the DSP now works more efficiently, the camera is more sensitive, and less light is required for great images.
• Optical Image Stabilization
A digital circuit could effectively stop the subtle hand shaking while holding the camera. But that would degrade the picture in the long run. The DSR-PD170 has a system of motors that correct the angle of the lens hundreds of times per second eliminating minute variances caused by your hand. This system works prior to image capture thus does not affect the quality of your video.
• Analog to Digital Converter Pass-Through
The PD170 can pass through an analog video signal and output a digital one and visa versa. Simply put, this eliminates the need for an outboard A-D/D-A converter box if the digital signal you need is Firewire (iLink) and the analog signal is composite or S-video.
• Settable Time Code
Like its broadcast brothers, the DSR-PD170 can be set to start timecode at any time from hours to seconds. This allows you to effectively name your cassettes based upon the sequence you shoot them. Your first tape can start at hour 1, -second tape hour 2 and so on.
• XLR Audio with Phantom Power
You will find 2 XLR inputs for industry standard professional microphones. Phantom power, a 48-volt power supply, can be supplied to special microphones that require such power. The XLRs can also input line level audio from, as examples, an audio cassette deck or VCR.
• Time and Date Window Burn
Useful in legal and security environments, the PD170 will, with a menu selection, burn time- down to seconds- and date onto the tape in a window over the image.
• Features New to the DSR-PD170
• Larger magnifier for viewfinder monitor
• Zoom rocker and record button on top handle
• Iris control increased from 12 to 24 increments
• Viewfinder and LCD monitor work simultaneously
• Lens hood integrates lens cap
• iLink cable strap makes it harder to accidentally pull loose digital cable
• Wide angle adapter and its own lens hood included with camera
• LCD monitor brighter for ease of use in bright light conditions

[Top]Memory CardsTip: Why do I need a larger memory card? Typically the manufacturer only supplies a starter card which doesn't offer comfortable capacity for a trip, special occasion etc. Don't get caught short. Special moments happen only once and you don't want to be stuck with no memory left! Usually it's good to go with a 1GB or a 2 GB card. High resolution photos take up plenty of space and before you know on a smaller memory card, you will run out of it.
[Top]BatteriesTip: The manufacturer only supplies a starter battery, which does not offer much time to take your pictures. Do not miss out on your child's first steps because of low batteries. You could never have too many.
[Top]Card ReadersTip: Don't drain the camera's battery life by plugging it in straight to the computer to upload your pictures or videos. It takes forever and it's just conducive to an always ready individual's lifestyle. Cancel all the waiting and always be ready for your next shot.
[Top]UV, Haze & ProtectionTip: UV Filters absorb ultraviolet rays and gives cleaner, sharper pictures with less haze. It is recommended to leave a UV filter on your camera lens at all times to protect the lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage. Though they can be replaced with other filters.
[Top]Filter KitsTip: Filter Sets are three different filters and they are: UV Filter, Circular Polarizer Filter and a Neutral Density Filter. UV Filters absorb ultraviolet rays and gives cleaner, sharper pictures with less haze. It is recommended to leave a UV filter on your camera lens at all times to protect the lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage. Though they can be replaced with other filters. Polarizing Filters are essential for outdoor photography; deepens intensity of blue skies , and reduces or eliminates glare. Neutral Density filters are used anytime you feel you are getting yellow or off white coloring while shooting indoors, mainly under flourescent lighting. Rather than getting this blemishing, it counteracts the effects of florescent light bulbs.

[Top]Pro Video TripodsTip: Have you ever returned from a trip thinking you had taken some great shots? But, upon review of your prints you were disappointed to discover that some of them, especially those shot indoors or at night or in other dark places, came out blurry, looking like someone was shaking the camera when you took the picture? That is a very common problem called “Camera Shake” and every year it destroys millions of photos that could have been wonderful. “Camera Shake” is caused when there isn’t enough light for the camera to set a fast shutter speed. Your camera’s shutter opens and has to stay open for up to several seconds for enough light to hit the film to make an image. The problem: most people cannot hold a camera perfectly still for more than a small fraction of a second. The blurry image you see is caused by the camera moving while the shutter is open, and it happens to everyone. To avoid “Camera Shake” and get a clear sharp picture in low light, the camera must be attached to something so it will not move at all. That is where a tripod comes in. Mount the camera to the tripod and it will not move. Also, use the camera’s self-timer or a cable release so that you are not touching the camera when the picture is taken. Do this, and you will eliminate “Camera Shake” and get the great clear pictures you were expecting.

[Top]On Camera BatteriesTip: Don't miss out on an imortant event because of only having 1 battery. Extended batteries are available for that reason. The trial size battery that this product comes with last generally between 20 and 40 minuntes.
[Top]Tapes and MediaTip: Keeping extra recordable media is a great idea so that you will never be stuck without anything to store your film on.

[Top]Camera Flashes & AccessoriesTip: A external/ add on flash is important and only then will you discover especially for indoors human potrait shots, skin tones are more natural and with the background showing more, it makes the overall picture more pleasant and exciting to look at. Focusing thus becomes very important too. Without focus, your subject becomes ”un important” in the overall pics.
[Top]Lens AccessoriesTip: This products is a special solution that will clean any smudges off any lens.

[Top]Wide Angle for Camera/ CamcorderTip: In Photography Wide-angle lenses provide large depth of field, making it simple to have foreground and background in focus. Because they take in such wide areas (angles of view), they are excellent for working in tight spaces, such as building interiors, or close-up group pictures. Most wide angles tend to show distortion, just like when you look into a curved mirror, particularly when a subject is photographed close-up. They are extremely handy when you don’t have time to focus accurately or compose properly, because they take in the whole scene and most of it will be in focus. No photojournalist would be without one. They are also ideal for landscapes, taking in large areas of ground and sky, and travel photography. Sometimes you need to really grab your video audience. You want to thrust them into a situation that they can't ignore. The uncanny sense of reality provided by a wide-angle lens might be just what your video requires. How does this work? By taking in an entire vista in one shot, the viewer's eye is free to roam. All of the detail, all of the encompassing sense of a location, is available to your viewer. Like in real life, the audience must decide what to glance at and focus on. One creative way to use wide-angle shots is to establish a first-person point of view. By cutting wide-angle shots with reverse angles showing someone's face, our experience becomes that person's point of view. In this way, we create a sense of connection between the actor and the audience. The lens enables you to capture a much bigger scene. In addition, by using wide angle, it makes camera movement appear smoother and shakiness to much less apparent. As wide angle greatly increases the overall focal range, you do not have to worry about important parts of your scene being out of focus. The wide-angle lens needn't be a slave to reality, however. Some of the most stunning video comes from errors, or distortion made by a really wide lens. When the corners of the image curl around, and more of the world is visible than your eyes thought possible, the effect is striking and we transcend our normal perception. The wide angle can both represent and overcome the very human limits of our vision.
[Top]Telephoto for Camera/ CamcorderTip: People who shoot wildlife or surfing competitions use long lenses to bring that distant person or animal up close for a good look. Telephoto lenses let you see the details of something far off. Telephoto lenses flatten perspective. They make different elements in the picture look closer together than they really are. You've seen this in movies where the hero seems to be walking down an incredibly crowded street with people squeezed right up next to him. You get this effect by standing well back and shooting with a long telephoto lens. The magnification of a telephoto can be used for dramatic effect. For example, you may want to shoot a twilight shot that includes the full moon in the background. The moon will appear larger and closer if you shoot with a long lens. You can also zoom in on objects that aren't so far away. While a telephoto lens usually will not focus close enough to be a true macro lens (used for very detailed close-ups), it will often enable you to take interesting close-ups or details. At close range, the shallow depth of field of a telephoto will also help the item stand out from its background. On even normal-sized subjects, you can minimize distracting backgrounds using depth of field. If possible, move your subject away from the background and adjust your focus to soften the background but keep the subject sharp. Manipulating perspective is a useful creative tool. If you want to associate two things that are separated, move back and shoot them with your telephoto. This will make them appear closer together. To be creative, you need to know your equipment, what it can do, and what it can't. The telephoto lens is one of your most creative tools. By learning its characteristics and visual effects, you can use this tool to increase the impact of your videos and/ or pictures.
